We visited the colosseum with tickets for the arena floor with a tour guide.
It is possible to visit independently, but I found the information that the guide explained to us really added to our visit and brought it to life. Our visit was booked for 5:30pm, and after queuing for a short time to enter, the tour lasted approximately one hour. As it was near closing time, we then had a little while to enjoy the views in relatively quiet atmosphere as many people were starting to leave.
There isn’t much to say apart from the colosseum is just spectacular and an absolute “must see” if you are visiting Rome.
Did not disappoint, full of history and extremely impressive in person. Tickets released 30 days in advance, but they sell out quick! Ensure you book only through the official site (colosseo.it) - another visitor in front of us was turned away with fake tickets. We purchased the 24H Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill tickets (18€ each). Staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Not too much queueing for 9am entry slot, although it was crowded with guided tours inside.
It's a must-do, even if it's a tourist classic. Arrival at the top of the hill is kind of a nightmare with scammers and sellers all over the place - please just ignore them and don't engage with them, it will make your life easier.Otherwise, it seems they keep them away from the actual area of the forum, colosseum, and old city area because they don't seem to bother you there. It's surprising how cool it is and how much it affects you to actually see this in person so despite it being a touristy thing, it's something you just have to go see.
