We did a self-guided trip through the colosseum and surrounding attractions. Save the money and opt for a non-guided tour. Be sure to book your tickets in advance even during the off-season as it is extremely busy.
Be weary and careful of the hoards of scammers in the area, specifically the ones trying to give you bracelets or play ‘ball in which cup’. Very disappointing to have these majestic attractions ruined by these unwelcome persons.
Our trip was during off-season and it was cool but very crowded still. I would hate to do this during the more crowded hot summer days. Wear good shoes and try to be patient with the throngs of people when trying to take photos.
Review of services offered by Tiqets, Booking Agent, Rome attractions -
It is not advisable to book attractions using this agency, it is just another overpriced agent unwilling to listen to reasoned information when a booking fails to work as planned. I was in area of the Colosseum earlier this week - assuming I can use the services of Tiqets to enter the venue, spaces were available for 3.15pm, booked the paces at 2.45pm with ample time to reach the entrance, not knowing I needed time to go to a particular area close to the Colosseum and get the pass for the venue, arrived at the venue at allotted time and was just humiliated by staff of the Colosseum as some kind of idiot - not really very good experience - this is not good for Tiqets or the venue - I guess who cares no shortage of tourist we will not miss upsetting one tourist? This was a big disappointment on my visit to Rome. Tiqets as a booking agent offers little compassion and is only interested in selling over priced venue tickets and should not be used on any occasion in any city/venue. The Colosseum as an attraction is spectacular but needs staff that can assist people, particularly seniors like myself who wish to visit this venue - it is not good to humiliate any person particularly at my age. Hope this helps those who may need assistance - BOOK DIRECTLY WITH VENUES OR THE OFFICIAL VENUE SITE. Michael Zurich Switzerland
According to the online bought tickets you should arrive one hour before your scheduled entry time. Once you get there they don't let you in. You must wait until the booked time comes up. No idea why they make you wait. During December the visitor numbers are very light but crowd control is enforced without reason. There aren't any benches for handicapped people to sit and rest!
Once you start your tour you will be caught in a chaotic signs and inefficient guiding system. The flow of visitors is not smartly guided, you will feel lost at times. No information available about what you will see. Minimal fractured information about the building and how events were staged. You will not see a reconstruction or model or pictures how visitors over 2000 years ago were seated, just as an example.
All in all very poor organisation, presentation of artifacts, and in general basic information. effective
