The Coloseum itself is utterly fabulous. Totally magnicent. However…
Trying to book as individuals for any of the special bits, such as the underground tour or the floor of the area is far too hard. I was told by an official on our visit all the big tour guide companies snap the slots up first.
This brings me on to guided tours. There are way too many and the groups are often too big. It’s time to make changes to ensure the visiting experience is as good as it can be for everyone. Either make all entry by tour only, or have hours of the day when individuals can move around without struggling through endless guided tours.
Finally - toilet facilities are scarce so go at the bottom!
It was very fun crowds were big but line wasn’t long provided you buy tickets beforehand.
If there were an option to give zero stars, that is exactly what Headout deserves.
I had meticulously planned a once-in-a-lifetime family vacation to Rome from California, something my family—especially my kids—had been eagerly looking forward to for months. Like most travelers, I did my research and found platforms like Headout, Viator, and others claiming to be authorized sellers for major attractions. Given how quickly tickets to iconic sites like the Colosseum and Pantheon sell out, I booked well in advance—over two months ahead—paying nearly $100 per person for the Colosseum guided tour and about $25 per person for the Pantheon.
Everything seemed legitimate. I received confirmation emails, created an account, downloaded their app, and had all tickets readily accessible. Headout’s instructions were clear about the meeting point and arrival time, and we followed them precisely, arriving early and checking in as instructed.
What happened next was beyond shocking.
We were bluntly told that our tickets had been cancelled—no explanation, no prior notice, no alternative arrangement. Just like that, our long-awaited Colosseum visit was gone. My children were heartbroken. What should have been a highlight of our trip turned into a complete disaster.
And it wasn’t just us.
There were multiple other families standing there—confused, frustrated, and equally devastated—who had also booked through Headout and were being told the exact same thing. This clearly wasn’t an isolated incident; it felt like a systemic failure or, worse, complete negligence.
Headout’s customer service was utterly useless. No accountability, no clear explanation, no urgency—just scripted apologies. They couldn’t even offer us an alternative slot for the Colosseum, not the same day, not the next day, not at all. Instead, they casually suggested a substitute tour of Palatine Hill—as if replacing one of the world’s most iconic landmarks with “some nearby ruins” was an acceptable solution. It was frankly insulting.
Unfortunately, the nightmare didn’t end there.
The same issue happened with our Pantheon tickets. Again, cancelled. Again, no explanation. Again, no resolution.
After wasting precious vacation time arguing with their support team, it became painfully clear that it was pointless. All they could offer was a refund—something they are obligated to do anyway. But a refund does not fix ruined plans, disappointed children, or lost experiences that cannot be recreated.
What price do you put on a once-in-a-lifetime family memory that was completely destroyed?
I strongly caution anyone considering Headout: book at your own risk. Having confirmation emails, app-based tickets, and advance bookings means absolutely nothing with them. We had everything in place, and still, we—and many others—were turned away.
Their customer service is cold, indifferent, and completely lacking in empathy. There is no ownership, no responsibility, and no genuine effort to make things right.
I am currently disputing the charges and seeking additional compensation, but the case is still open—and frankly, I am not hopeful.
Avoid Headout if you value your time, money, and peace of mind.
We visited the colosseum with tickets for the arena floor with a tour guide.
It is possible to visit independently, but I found the information that the guide explained to us really added to our visit and brought it to life. Our visit was booked for 5:30pm, and after queuing for a short time to enter, the tour lasted approximately one hour. As it was near closing time, we then had a little while to enjoy the views in relatively quiet atmosphere as many people were starting to leave.
There isn’t much to say apart from the colosseum is just spectacular and an absolute “must see” if you are visiting Rome.
