This was my third holiday to Rome and the Colosseum remains magnificent every time. It really isn't enough to see it from the outside, I would highly recommend going inside as you get to see the underground where all the animals and gladiators were kept. Not only this but there are multiple artifacts and information detailing the history of the colosseum which are well worth the read.
I took my partner who was very happy that there were designated smoking spots inside the colosseum.
We did the roman Forum first and he did make a comment that he found the Colosseum underwhelming after doing the forum first.
I recommend booking a month in advance doing the colosseum first in the morning between 9 and 12am then doing the forum in the afternoon especially if its your first time.
Alternatively if you don't know where to have breakfast and your in a rush do the forum first as they have a café on site!
I would also highly recommend going for an evening walk through the city and walking past the Colosseum at night when its all lit up is an experience in itself, its quiet and safe so you can sit there and marvel while eating an ice cream together and really appreciate the moment.
Do NOT use GetYourGuide! They canceled our very expensive colosseum tour at time of check in (we were early) and were completely overbooked which they told us. Use anyone else
Been multiple times now!! The history is utterly breathtaking!
I have always sorted tickets before going just for ease, and have never had a particularly long queue time!
Fully worth it!!
We did not enter because there was a very long line, but even just from the outside, the Colosseum leaves one speechless. Its grandeur and beauty are immediately noticeable, and it is incredible to think about how much history it holds. It is definitely a place to visit at least once in a lifetime.
