An unforgettable piece of Roman history

The Colosseum was one of the highlights of our trip to Rome. Seeing it from the outside is impressive, but walking through the different levels and looking down into the arena made the history feel much more real.

The admission fee felt reasonable for such an important site, and we spent around two and a half hours exploring. It was crowded, but the timed entrance kept things fairly organized. Staff were professional and helpful during the ticket and security checks. The atmosphere was fascinating, although there is limited shade and quite a lot of walking. Best for history lovers, couples, families with older children and anyone visiting Rome for the first time.

Simply amazing

The colosseum in Rome is in my opinion one of the top ten must see things in the world, not just in Rome. I’ve been three times: first as a teenager on a family holiday, then in my 20’s on an Interrail ticket, and now as a retired pensioner. Much has changed over the years, but that’s a drop in the ocean compared to the almost 2,000-year history of the colosseum.

You must book in advance to visit the colosseum as entry is strictly by timed entry slots. The official platform to purchase Colosseum tickets is the “Parco Archeologico del Colosseo Online Ticket Portal”. This is the cheapest place to book tickets, but they sell out extremely quickly. You can often buy tickets from third-party vendors when the official site has sold out, but you will have to pay more (sometimes a lot more).

We bought the “Full Experience – Arena” tickets from the official site for 24 Euros per person. These gave us unguided access to all levels of the colosseum except for the very top (3rd / ”Attic”) floor and the underground level. You have great views of the underground level from the arena floor though. The ticket also includes entry to the Roman Forum which is a huge site in itself.

There is little point in turning up too early as you won’t be allowed entry until your allotted time. However, don’t turn up too late either as you will lose your slot and will not be allowed in. You will need to show photo ID (e.g. passport or driving licence) along with your ticket. Don’t forget this – we saw people being turned away. If you book your tickets from a third-party provider, make sure that the tickets have you your names on them – no match, no entry.

Take your time and soak it all in. We sat on the benches on the arena floor for more than half an hour just soaking up the atmosphere and chatting about the history of this amazing monument.

A memorable Children's Day visit with our family

We visited the Colosseum on June 1st, 2026, during Children's Day, as part of a family trip with our two kids. It was definitely one of the highlights of our time in Rome. Our children had learned a little about Ancient Rome at school, so seeing the Colosseum in person made them genuinely excited.

There were quite a lot of people, but arriving in the morning helped us avoid the biggest crowds. We spent around two hours exploring and taking photos. There isn't much shade, so bring water and hats if you're visiting with children, especially in early summer. Overall, it's an unforgettable place that combines history with a great family experience.

Extra Long Queues in the Baking Sun

Extra long queues in the baking sun! Not a great experience. Pre-purchased tickets do not prevent extra long queues in the baking sun. It can take over an hour to get into the Roman Forum and the interior of the Colosseum is overcrowded.
