What You See
- The Hall of Prisoners
As you make your way to the world’s most famous sculpture, the David, you first pass through the Hall of Prisoners. These unfinished sculptures, done by Michelangelo, seem to be stuck in an eternal struggle to escape their marble prisons. These eerie creatures add to the thrill and mounting expectation as you approach the David, the paragon of Renaissance perfection.
- The David
Michelangelo carved this transcendent sculpture out of a single block of unwanted marble. Standing at 5.17 meters tall, the statue was originally meant to be positioned 80 meters above ground on Florence’s Cathedral. The David was hailed as a masterpiece from the very beginning, and the Vestry Board, the original commissioners of the sculpture, agreed that it was too perfect to be so high off the ground. It was decided that he would be placed in the political heart of Florence, the Piazza della Signoria. Your guide describes how this sculpture is different from any other artist’s depiction of David and shares the fascinating stories behind this masterpiece and its acclaimed creator, Michelangelo.
- Boticelli and the Medici Violin
As you stroll the gallery with your guide, you also see many other cherished works of art, such as Botticelli’s Madonna of the Sea and the Medici violin handmade by Antonio Stradivari. The Gallery houses the Grand Ducal collection of instruments, including an early relative of the piano, that belong to the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory. With a local expert to guide you, this tour of the Accademia Gallery leaves you with a comprehensive understanding of the museum’s star attraction, the David, as well as the many other works of art housed within.
