  • You meet your guide in Piazza Venezia at the Emperor Trajan’s column, an immense pillar with intricate carvings depicting his victory over the region of Dacia (present-day Romania). You learn about the Vittoriano, the grand monument to the unification of Italy, that dominates the square. Your guide also discusses Mussolini, who completely reshaped this part of Rome, and you see the balcony from which he would make his famous speeches. You then make your way to the Trevi Fountain. This baroque masterpiece by Nicola Salvi is not only one of Rome’s most treasured sites, but it is also one of the oldest water sources in the city.

After throwing your coins in the fountain, your guide leads you across the famous shopping street Via del Corso, and you see what is left of the Temple of Hadrian. Its remaining 11 Corinthian columns are now part of a modern-day building. A peek down the side reveals the original foundation, showing how the street level has risen over the centuries. Just around the corner, the Pantheon awaits. This is the third version of the building and has been standing since AD 125. Despite its age, it is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world!
