The museum is massive and the range of art and exhibits mind boggling. We chose a hosted skip the line package and this was the ideal balance. We met our host at the designated point and were escorted into the museum in a painless way. Not having a guide once inside should have allowed us to explore at our own pace as we wanted to spend some hours there (and most tours give an hour or so in the museum). However, we were told the Sistine Chapel would close at 1pm so there was a mad rush to get there which at times felt like a stampede. My major complaint was that most decent museums of this size hand out a map which allows visitors to navigate around and.know.where.to.find things. App based guides are not good enough.
Tickets were purchased in advance based on official information that the Sistine Chapel would be open on January 9 until 2:00 PM. We entered at 08:30, yet no information was given during ticket scanning about any closure. Only after entering did we see posters stating the Sistine Chapel was closed all day.
There was no prior email, no warning, and no transparency. When we raised the issue, the on-site manager (Luca) was rude and unprofessional, even stating that the entire Vatican, including the Pope, were “scammers.” Despite admitting the situation was misleading, no solution was offered—no rescheduling, no ticket change, no refund.
For an institution of this scale, this behavior is unacceptable. Poor communication, disrespectful staff, and zero accountability. Extremely disappointing experience.
